“Its great weather for ducks!” Some complain about the amount of rain and what it could bring. I was driving through the farmlands of Chilliwack yesterday and marvelled at the mini-lakes that have appeared in the fields. One hopes that there is enough time for them to drain before they flood.
Other folk celebrate the rain and the promise of good moisture in the ground in preparation for the crops next year. The ground soaks up the water and stores it meaning less irrigation is needed. Too much rain too quickly and the water just runs off, but long steady soaking rains mean time for the ground to soak it up.
It is wet out there! A friend of mine once said that we need to prepare for rain. Not the water falling from the skies, but the Holy Spirit falling gently and bringing God’s rich blessing. Our hearts and lives need to be like thirsty ground ready to soak Him up in preparation for the harvest to come, allowing him to confront and wash away sin, softening our hearts to receive what God has for us, growing and maturing us as we seek to become more like him.
Where is your heart this day? Is it filled with busyness, tired and stressed? Is it filled with anxiety, fear, or worry? Is it wrestling with sin, hardened and dry? Is there a sensitivity to what the Spirit may be whispering to you, a sense that you need to be ready in case He commands something of you? Where is your heart today?
Can I urge you to stop what you are doing and take a couple of minutes to quiet your heart and ask the Spirit to search the depths of your being? Ask Him to point out anything that is crowding God from your life or is an offense to Him. Ask Him to fill you afresh this day, and to saturate your being with His refreshing and power-filled presence. Allow Him, like the gentle rain being soaked up by the thirsty earth, to freshen your spirit, to bring new life, new hope, a greater sense of Jesus with you. Psalm 139:23-24 “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
